Frequently Asked Questions
What is First Night?
First Night is a family-friendly, alcohol-free arts festival held on New Year's Eve. Sioux Falls is one of 130 cities around the world that celebrate First Night and is part of First Night International, a global licensing organization. First Night began in Boston, Massachusetts in 1976 as part of their bicentennial celebration.
First Night features a variety of music, dance, theatre, and art along with activities for both kids and adults, and finishes with a free fireworks display at Falls Park at midnight. First Night will also feature an early kid's fireworks display this year. The program guide will be available at Sioux Falls Hy-Vee stores and other locations around town prior to the event.
Where does First Night take place?
There are a total of ten First Night venues throughout the downtown area of Sioux Falls from 10 a.m. to midnight on December 31. A map will be posted two weeks before the event and in the program guide.
Where do I get a First Night admission button?
First Night Admission buttons are $6 and are available at all Hy-Vee locations, the Orpheum, Main Street Sioux Falls, Holiday Inn City Centre, and at the door of each venue the day of the event. Buttons go on sale November 23.

Is First Night for all ages?
Yes! There are activities and performances for kids from 10 a.m. until 8:00pm, and then great bands and performances for grown-ups too! Pick up a program guide or check out the schedule page on this site for details.
Is it a fundraiser?
No, First Night is not specifically a fundraiser, although we do raise money for various organizations through project such as the Luminary Display. Proceeds from First Night Sioux Falls are used to pay the artists, production and marketing costs, and any additional funds go into making the event bigger and better the next year! First Night is meant to promote the arts and bring the community together to celebrate.
